Translation of "citar" into English

Quan responc a un missatge, tan sols se' n cita una part. Per què?

When I reply to a message, only a part of the message is quoted. How come?

Quan ens van citar al despatx del subdirector, pensàvem que ens allargarien les sentències.

We were summoned to the deputy warden’s office, fully expecting that our sentences would be extended.

I, però, que es va citar i es repeteix.

And yet, it gets cited and it gets repeated.
